Exciting Book Club Update from Becky

Hey everyone.. Just a thought on this book. ( Word of Wisdom: a Modern Interpretation by John Widtsoe) It is timeless and very informative. In fact, it is one of the fundamental beginnings of Redmond's Real Foods philosophy and ultimately the organic foods store. They tried to get Deseret Book to reprint the original Widstoe text----- they refused, so Redmond actually bought the rights to the book and reprinted it themselves. I noticed it is very expensive on Amazon due to being out of print. However, I can get as many copies as you would like from Redmond. I don't know the price for sure, but I'm guessing between 8-12 dollars. I will call on Monday for sure. I have referred to this book on many occasions and it is a staple in our library.

--Becky Bastian

Little Women - November

Our Little Women's club leader this month did a fabulous job with her book choice "Swiss Family Robinson." The girls had a great time tasting tropical fruit and playing games.
This week we will be creating shadow boxes/dioramas of a scene from the book. Remember to bring any supplies you may need to finish it. Items provided are cardboard box, popsicle sticks, glue guns, paints & paintbrushes.
See you there.

Get Ready for December's Book Club

Do you want to "run and not be weary, " "find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge?"

These are the promises to those who keep the Word of Wisdom (Doctrine and Covenants ch. 89)
For this month's selection we will be focusing on health by reading and discussing:
Word of Wisdom: a Modern Interpretation by John Widstoe.
With scripture and fascinating scientific studies and research, he helps us to know how we can more fully take advantage of the blessings that come with this inspired code of health.

It is a short book. You can read it for free by clicking on this link:
http://www.ldsveg.org/WidtsoeWordOfWisdomAModernInterpretation.htm
or if you prefer book-form you can try to find a used copy of it somewhere (it is not currently in print.)

Come share your thoughts and any tips, products, recipes, etc. that you have on healthy living
Wednesday, DECEMBER 8, 7:30 p.m. at Laura Christensen's home (460 E. 950 N. Richfield)

Thanks to all for a wonderful book discussion last Wednesday. Like Heather said, I'll be putting my Pilgrim's Progress next to my Bible to quote from often :)

Hi girls-
Just a reminder that we have book group this week.  We will be discussing the fabulous Pilgrims Progress.  I hope to see each of you there.  If you haven't had a chance to read, please come anyway!  This is a great way for us to help and support each other and get to know the people that are mentoring our children.  We will meet at Heather Friant's  (345 West 1200 South in Monroe) at 7:30 PM.  Hope to see all of you!  Heather

Attention:Scholars

Hi Guys
Just a reminder that we have scholar club this week.  We will meet at my home on Thursday at 7:00.  As I looked at the next date that we are supposed to meet I see that is Thanksgiving, we will go ahead and let you eat turkey that day instead.  We will instead meet that first week in December.  Because that will be our last meeting for 2010 we will wait to discuss Huck Finn until that day, those of you that are frantically reading  can slow down just a little.  You do need to read chapters 3 & 4 in the TJED book and write your "Be The Change" paper.  I look forward to seeing all of you!  Heather

Treasures Unearthed: Read on...

Translated into 200 languages and never out of print, Pilgrim's Progress is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of English literature. With a reputation like that of course we had to pick it for next month's read.
Mark your calendar's for
Wednesday, November 10
7:30 p.m.
Heather Friant's home
This will be my 3rd year in FSA. I absolutely love working with clubs and all the various activities we've done over the years. That said, I consider my participation in Book Club to be the most rewarding and educational of them all.
The books we have read have been life-changing for me personally. They always seemed to come at a time when I needed to learn that particular thing and definitely helped me in my homeschooling. From each I feel like I have received a world-class education! If you want to be a better teacher, mother, person there are great books that will help and inspire.
Does it get any better? Yes!!! To be able to then meet together with like-minded women and share in their wisdom, insights, and life experiences, their joys and challenges of teaching--that is the icing on the cake! Can you tell I am still basking in the glow of last night's discussion of Joan of Arc?:)--so enjoyable! Even if you don't get a chance to read the book selection for the month, come for the discussion. You will not be disappointed.
What blessings are good literature and good company!
If you have read a book that helped you immensely in any area of your life please come and suggest it for a book club selection.
Here is a compilation of some of the works we've read/discussed:
Totto-chan-- Set in Japan, a true story of a brilliant teacher who changed the lives of his students through is revolutionary yet simple educational philosophies.
The Call to Brilliance --finding and bringing out the talents and brilliance in each of our children
Honey for a Child's Heart -- importance of reading aloud to children. Suggested readings for each age.
The Anatomy of Peace --and I'd like to add The Bonds that Make us Free -- changing our relationships by changing ourselves first. a MUST READ!
Wild Days--Keeping Nature Journals
Beginner's Guide to Constructing the Universe -- packed with info about the beauty and symbolism of numbers and how they are ever-present in nature.
The Story of Science-- The Scientific Revolution explained as in an engaging story.
The Majesty of Books -- summary of great works of literature and great ideas for keeping your own life books.
Jane Eyre -- writing at its' best
Alas, Babylon -- fiction novel of what life would be like in the event of a world war/nuclear distaster.
A Thomas Jefferson Education -- teaching children to learn through their passions
A Charlotte Mason Companion -- a breath of fresh air--simplifying and enjoying the learning process for our children.

Miniture Horse Heaven

We had a wonderful time at the Leaver Farms, learning about, grooming and feeding the horses. Cathy showed us how to properly groom these little guys and let us help. Our horse loving girls were ecstatic and these miniature horses were the perfect size to handle. Becky brought apples for us to feed to the horses and Cathy let us go right in with the big group and pet and love them. The girls were in horse heaven. We had a great time!

A huge thanks to Cathy for her time with us - if you want to send her a thank you note - (1287 Jones Rd. Monroe 84754.)

Join us: October 5th - matinee at 2:00 pm -
in the Randall L. Jones Theatre for ---

The Diary of Anne Frank

By Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett,
newly adapted by Wendy Kesslman
Directed by James Edmondson

Macbeth

Life is no longer safe for Anne and her family in 1942 Nazi Amsterdam. Forced into hiding, this simple girl records her struggles through the power of the written word. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a testament not to the brutality of war and hatred, but to the unshakable spirit of a young girl and to the hopes and loves of a family and a people trying to hold to their faith.

Did you know? After the Bible, "The Diary of Anne Frank" is the most widely read nonfiction book in the world and has been translated into 60 languages.

Tickets are available to us at half off. For balcony seating that would be $12.50 per ticket. Everyone can split the cost for gas depending on how many choose to attend.
Families are welcome. We will need other parents to attend. (The theater does not allow children under 6)
(If you would like better seating please look at the website and decide. All of our seating is half off the regular priced ticket.) http://www.bard.org/plays/diary.html
Tickets need to be paid in advance. If you would like to go I need your ticket money by Sat. Sept. 25th. We will work out the gas later.
We am trying to work out some details for some other fun opportunities at the Festival so I will keep you updated.
For other interesting facts about Anne Frank check out this website http://www.annefrank.org/en/Subsites/Home/
Please give your ticket money to Amber and call if you have any questions. Thanks

American Liberty Girls!

It's time for another Tea Party. Join us for clubs this Tuesday at 12:45 p.m.

We will also be practicing the fine art of writing with a quill pen and ink. Come make a little copy book to take home.

See you there!

Knights!

Tuesday we are going on a field trip! Come and time and be ready for some 'hot' fun! We will be going to the 'Hot Pots' over by Monroe. (We might all have to squeeze in the back of my truck, so if anyone is uncomfortable with that, then you might not want to come. I do hope that won't be a concern......) We will learn what the 'Hot Pots' is, where the water has been, what temp the water is coming out of it, and we will boil some eggs! Please RSVP to me to let me know if you ARE or ARE NOT coming. I need a pretty close count! Mandy 201-9175

Just A Note

Hello Families
I feel like I owe you an apology as I have been AWOL since we have started the year.  I missed the opening social and book group and I think you are just minutes from PE and I am in my pajamas at home with a newborn on my lap.  I have been more than a little out of it, but rumor has it that just days after having a baby I consented to be chairman of the board.  Note to self:  Do not invite women to your house when big decisions are being made and you are taking Demerol post c-section!  I just wanted to let you know if you have questions or concerns that though I am certain I don't know the answer that I will find the answer if you need me.  To the new families, welcome!  I look forward to knowing you and your children and hope that if you have any kids 10-16 that you will consider having them join our scholar club, we have such a great time together.  I still plan to begin scholar club on October 14th, more details on that forthcoming.  Until that day I am trying to figure out how to be mom to 6 boys.  Two of my kids made the tough decision (for mom anyway) to return to school for the year and so it will be Kyle's face that you see most often.  I hope that all of you are having a great year and that your kids are doing great no matter where they are being educated.  I am grateful to be a part of this group and thrilled to be working with all of you wonderful ladies.  If you have concerns or questions about anything please feel free to contact me anytime.  Heather Friant

Not Coming?

Families,

At the get together on Monday, I will be handing out our informational 'packets' to each family. The packets have some forms for you to fill out that we will be needing back before clubs. Please plan on coming ready to fill out some info and to write a check out for the first of the year fees. If you will not be able to attend on Monday, please let me know so I can get you your packet ahead of time.

Thanks! Mandy 201-9175

If you are interested in liberty and the true role of our constitution and government, visit this website. I have attended Steven Pratt's lectures during the past few weeks and he is an inspiring advocate of truth. He was an associate of Cleon Skousen and wrote the forward to his book The 5000 year Leap.

Highly recommended and an excellent resource for teaching your children.

P.S.
Remember to celebrate the signing of our Constitution on September 17th!
