5 Radical Ideas to Reform Education

Came across this article and thought it would be an interesting read and discussion for all of us at upcoming book club (29th, my house) ( along with our book, Clockwork Universe)
Jal Mehta (assistant professor at Harvard Grad School of Education) published:      5 Pathways to Reshaping Schools

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting different results --sound like our current education system??  (U.S. ranks 14th in reading, 25th in math)
Mehta's ideas are radical which seems exactly what we need.... Enjoy!

Attention Scholars-Date Change

Hi guys
We need to make a change for scholar club.  We are going to change our meeting this month to October 11th and we will meet at 6:00.  With so few of us participating this year and with us only meeting once a month I will be moving Thursday's around to suit those of you who regularly attend.  This month one of our regulars has a conflict and hence the change.  I apologize for confusing the schedule, but hope that it helps all of you to know that you can call me and I will make changes so that all can participate.  So October 11th at 6:00 we will have dinner (Leonardo's Minestrone) and be watching a movie featuring Leonardo...can't wait to see you all!  Heather

October 2nd 2:00p.m.

This is just a little reminder about our Shakespeare activity next Tuesday.

We will be reviewing the Bard's life and doing some hands-on activities based on the Elizabethan time period.  I have also put together a couple of things just for the older kids as well.

If you would like to come prepared with a sonnet or monologue that would be fun, but if not....no biggie.  Oh, your favorite knock knock joke would be great.

Remember we are doing this at the park in Annabella.  Please give me a call for directions if needed.

Thanks!  Mandy  201-9175

October 2nd

Hey!!

It was so great to meet all the new families tonight at the BBQ.  Thanks to Heather S. for doing such a great job!

Our first 'clubs' meeting will be Tuesday, October 2nd at 2:00 p.m.  It will be held at the old Annabella town hall which is right by the park.

I would really love it if I could get a count of how many kids are going to be at the activity and their ages.  What I had planned might not work, so I am going to re-vamp everything.  Knowing exactly what ages of the kids I am going to have will help a lot.

If I do not get an RSVP email from you, I will assume you are not coming and therefore not plan on you.  So please email me at this email if you are going to come:  snazzdandy@hotmail.com.  (Do not reply to this post as I will not get the reply.)

Thanks loads.  Call me if you have any questions.  201-9175

BOOK CLUB: Apology

Hello All
Book group was supposed to be at my home tonight and some of you didn't get the news until you got here that it was postponed until next week.  My dad was admitted to the hospital for an emergency surgery this afternoon and so I wasn't home for book club.  I am sorry to those of you who made the drive and look forward to having you here next week (August 30th at 7:30) to discuss How To Think Like Leonardo DaVinci.  There was also some confusion on if this was scholar club, it isn't.  We chose to read this book this month and it does coincide with what we are studying for scholar club this year.  The date to begin scholar club is pending, but plan on it in September.  Again I apologize for the inconvenience.  Heather

A New Year

 Hello Ladies:

School starting is just around the corner, I hope you all feel more ready to get going than I do!  We made some plans for next year for FSA and now that we have had the summer to think and make plans for the coming year for our families I want to make sure that we are all still on the same page for next year.  Our plan was to meet once a month and each person take charge of a month to share something they are passionate about.  Can I get some feedback from EVERYONE that plans to participate and a note about what you plan to teach.  We also need to settle on a new secretary.  Mandy has done that faithfully and perfectly for the last few years, thanks Mandy, but this year we need to have someone else handle that.

So please drop me a note about your plans, who wants to participate and your thoughts on FSA for this year ASAP.  Also, I am only sending this by blog so if you know of someone who isn't getting the blog posts please forward this information to them.  I would like to hear back from everyone in the next 2 weeks.  After that we will assume that you aren't participating and have no opinion whatsoever on FSA.  Also, in theory I think it was a nice idea to not have a president or chairman of our board, but I do think that we need someone to take charge.  I would really appreciate someone stepping into those shoes and we all know those are not big shoes to fill!  I hope you are all having a great summer and I look forward to hearing from you.  Heather

Attention Scholars

Hi Guys
I wanted to let you know the plan for next year since you will need to do some prep over the summer.  We discussed voting, but I decided on something that I am just dying for us to do!  I know you guys will jump in with my over enthusiasm for the book and ideas I am announcing.  Not to hold you in suspense any longer, the book is How To Think Like Lenoardo DaVinci by Micheal Gelb.  I LOVE this book and who doesn't want to think like Leonardo, the man was a genius!  We will eat homemade minestrone, do some drawing lessons (obviously not taught by me), maybe we can attend the symphony...anyway I am super excited.  I know we were going to do more hanging out and less learning, but how about if we do both?  I want each of you to purchase your OWN book this summer and read it and mark up your favorite parts.  There will be no charge for scholar club but I really want each kid to have their own book, read it this summer and be prepared to dive in when the school year starts.  Happy Reading!  Heather

MEETING CHANGE!

Hello All
We have a change for our planning meeting (yes, I know, again).  It seems to take an act of congress to get us all together.  Becky's son is playing baseball out of town on Thursday and so we need to change our day.  So the new meeting date is TOMORROW at 1:00 pm at Becky's home.  We are moving forward with this even if we are short on numbers because we need to make plans for the camp out.  If you can't make it, PLEASE call me and let me know your thoughts on the camp out, your plans for next year and any input you think we need to discuss for the future of FSA.  I would appreciate an RSVP if you got this so I know if I need to make some calls.  Thanks Heather

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Two Important Announcements

Two important things to note on your calenders:
First off we will be holding our planning meeting for the camp out and the future of FSA for next year on May 10th at 1:00 at Becky's home.  PLEASE plan to attend if you are on the board or want your family to be involved in FSA in any way for next year.  If you absolutely can't make it, please call me and talk to me about your FSA needs so that I can bring them up in our meeting.

Second, book club is cancelled for this month.  We had trouble pinning a date down because of women's conference and Laura C's mom passed away this week, do keep her in your prayers.  We will meet in May and discuss The Beginner's Guide to Constructing the Universe  and we will postpone picking another book until we meet again.

I have posted this on the blog and will also send one to the e-mail addresses that I have.  Please respond so that I know who I missed.

Thanks, Heather

Book Night vs. BYU Women's Conference

BYU Women's Conference is April 26 & 27.
This is also the same night as book club.
I am going to women's conference and wondered if anyone else will be going to w.c. instead of bookclub.
Let me know and if there are too many of us, we'll make a book night change. Otherwise we'll keep it for that Thurs. and I'll find someone else to host for me.
Thanks,
laura

Planning Meeting

Hello Ladies
I think we need to start the process of finding a time where we can get together and discuss the camp out and FSA plans for next year.  I know that it will be a miracle to have us all present so I am going to propose a time and then you can e-mail me and let me know if that won't work.  We need to have all board members and anyone who plans to have their children involved in FSA next year in attendance.  So suggestion #1 is May 10th at 7:00.  OK let the busy schedules begin to duke it out!  Thanks.  Heather

APRIL BOOK

A Beginner's Guide to Constructing the Universe: The Mathematical Archetypes of Nature, Art, and Science

April 27 at Laura C.'s

Monday, March 26, 2012

Simplicity! Simplicity! Simplicity!

Every man is the builder of a temple, called his body, to the god he worships, after a style purely his own, nor can he get off by hammering marble instead. We are all sculptors and painters, and our material is our own flesh and blood and bones. Any nobleness begins at once to refine a man's features, any meanness or sensuality to imbrute them.
                                                                            --Henry David Thoreau (Walden)

The real job of every moral teacher...

“The real job of every moral teacher is to keep bringing us back, time after time, to the old simple principles which we are all so anxious not to see; like bringing a horse back and back to the fence it has refused to jump or bringing a child back to a lesson that it wants to shirk.”

Attention: Scholars

Hi guys
I just want to remind you about scholar club on Thursday.  I need to move the time to 6:30 since Kyle has a game at 5:30, but other than that it remains the same.  I am still waiting on RSVP's from most of you so please let me know if you are planning on attending.  Thanks.  Heather

Attention: Scholars

Hi Guys
I hope you had a great Christmas!  Time to start up scholar club again.  We need to change our night due to a change in  book club.  We will try to have our official night be the third Thursday in January.  If this is a major conflict for any of you please contact me, I want all of you there so we will always try to work together for a date that works for everyone.  So for January...January 19th at 6:00 PM.  Dinner will be served.  The offer is still in effect for a treat for those that read the book Do Hard Things.  We will be talking about goals that night so be thinking about some of yours.  See you then.  Heather
PS Please RSVP so I know if I need 5 pizzas or 20!
