Hey Everyone
I had this really cool video all prepared, but it wouldn't load :(. Anyways Scholar club is on Thursday at Six (at night, really are you kidding by saying it would be in the morning). Anyways, Dress Warm and have warm shoes (or don't I really don't care, but I think my mom does hmmm....) Eat before because we aren't having dinner (sad, huh. I tried to tell her). She'll drive you home (she always does so I don't know why I'm writing this). Ok. See you then. Kyle
Oh P.S. you have to see my video
P.P.S. It rocks
P.P.P.S. Really I'm not joking.

Ceramics class and Knights

CLUBS WILL BE AT THE PETERSON HOME ON TUESDAY THE FIRST. (Except Little Women)

Hey!

The new ceramics store on Main Street (by Ideal Dairy) is offering classes! I have called and arranged a time slot for our homeschooling group. Here is the info:

Dates: Every Thursday in January; 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th.

Time: 1:30 pm and possibly 2:30 pm

Cost: $10 per person for the class. You will pay for the project you choose as well. (She said cost of project depends on what you choose, there is a wide variety of sizes, etc.) Bring your own acrylic paint and brushes.

The only catch is that she only has room for 10 students at a time. If we have more that would like to participate, she would have another class for us starting at 2:30pm the same day. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in so I can get a count. Also, write which time slot would be best for you. Thanks!

KNIGHTS

This month we will be learning about Abe Lincoln. I don't think we will be having a game comp of facts, so don't stress it out. Come prepared to give your little presentations, though.

Also, this month I am going to challenge all the boys to memorize the Gettysburg Address. If they do it, there will be a special prize for them. I will send home on Tuesday some little memorizing helps.

Does anyone have a baseball and bat? This was Abe's favorite game and I don't have a baseball and bat!! Can you believe that? Let me know if you do, and please bring it to clubs on Tuesday so we can PLAY BALL!

Scholar Change

Hello Scholars!
As is often the case so many of you are sick or otherwise busy tonight that we were down to only a couple of kids who could attend tonight.  I am going to cancel scholar club for tonight and we will re-schedule.  I am trying to reach all of you by phone but wanted to make sure everyone knew for sure.  I am sorry to change so close to our scheduled meeting time, but with 5 kids out I will wait until we can have more of us together.  Thanks.  Heather

Book Night Change

Hello Ladies
Laura W has requested that we change book night as she has an appointment that night every month.  I too have found that Lyndon and I have Roundtable that night and was going to have to start coming less as well.  I would like to propose that we keep it as it is for November and discuss whether a change would be possible for future dates.  If you vehemently disagree let me know, if not we will plan on discussing a change at Laura C's.  Thanks.  Heather

Monday, October 24, 2011

Attention: Scholars

Hey Scholars
I need to change our time to meet so that we can be outside part of the time with some light.  I want us to meet at 6 pm (eat before you come though we are just having treats).  We are going on a little field trip so wear walking shoes and a jacket since we will be outside.  Please be on time, we will be leaving my home no later than 6:15.  I look forward to seeing you all.  Heather

Thursday, October 20, 2011

Attention: Scholars

Scholars mark you calenders for scholar club next week.  Thursday, October 27th at 7:00 pm.  I hope all of you have been really thinking about the goal you want to set for the next 9 months.  Please write it on a index card and bring it with you that night.  I also want to encourage (though it is not required) you to read the book Do Hard Things.  This book discusses much of what I plan to talk about with you guys this year.  It is not required, but there is a treat involved for those who do read it.  I have a copy and am willing to share if you want it. I look forward to seeing you all.  Heather

Attention:Scholars

Our first scholar club will be held September 22nd.  We will meet at 6:00 PM at my house.  We will have dinner and I need you to bring something pot luck to share.  This year all of our meetings will help us have a desire to do the necessary work to reach our dreams!  I am super excited to have all of you here.  Remember that if you haven't joined us before and you want to try it out this is a good one to give it a try.  After this first meeting just send me a note if you are planning to stay with us.  I look forward to seeing you all.  Call or e-mail with questions.  Heather F.

Art Supplies

Art list is in for Annie Henrie day on Thursday.  All of these things can be purchased at Wal Mart rather inexpensively.  Remember the time is 2:00-4:00 at the Annabella Town Hall.  If you talk to anyone about the fireside please tell them the location is at the RICHFIELD EAST STAKE CENTER, we have some misinformation out there that it is in Monroe.  Also a reminder it is at 6 PM and it is Sunday dress.  Here is the list:
-1 canvas (cheap is fine- you can find canvas glued to a board for fairly cheap at a lot of art stores) between 11 x 14 inches to 18 x 24 inches
-1 set of brushes they'd like to use
acrylic paint- primary colors at least, black, brown, & white but a large variety would be fun
-1 photo of something they'd love to paint, or they can paint it out of their heads if they want
-1 surface they normally wouldn't paint on: they can have fun with this- an old piece of wood, a mailbox, a shoe, old books, frames, paintings they've already done but didn't like...wood, heavy duty cloth, metal, glass
-1 ruler
-sandpaper

Annie Henrie Art Day

I just want to remind everyone about a big day for FSA on Thursday.  Artist Annie Henrie is coming to share her talents with us and we don't want to miss it!  She will be at the Annabella Town Center from 2-4:00 and will be teaching an art class to our kids ages 7 and above.  I will be posting a list of things that you need to bring as soon as it becomes available.  I know how busy you all are but we have a real once in a lifetime opportunity with this and I hope we have an excellent turn out.  Also be reminded that she will be speaking at a fireside that evening at 6:00 PM at the Richfield East Stake Center.  She will also be displaying some of her original works that evening.  I hope to see all of you that day at this wonderful event.  E-mail or call Mandy or I with questions.  Thanks.  Heather

Childrens Book Group

We had a computer glitch and the date was sent out as two different dates to my account.  Hopefully that didn't happen to you, but just in case the date for the children's book group is Wednesday the 28th of September from 1-3:00.  Hope to see you all!  Heather

Children's Book Group

Hello All
Mark your calenders for our first ever children's book group!  We will be meeting on September 28th at 1:00 PM at Heather's home in Monroe (345 West Liz's Way).  All children are invited from 2-18 (note to older kids this will be fun and silly and you may be way to mature for this).  Please bring your family's favorite silly picture book.  We will read together and then have fun activities based on the books we read.  If your children are 6 or older you are welcome to drop your kids off and pick them up at 3:00, if you are leaving kids under the age of 6 please stay with them or leave an older sibling with them to help them with the activities.

I want the kids to have fun together and fall in love with reading (if they aren't already).  I happen to love picture books and reading to my kids more than anything and thought it would be fun to share this passion with all of the kids.  I hope all of your kids will be there.  Please RSVP names and ages of who will be attending and the name of the book your family will bring on that day.  Thanks.  Heather

Singing Class

"Nickie Isom is holding a "Signing Time" class from 1-2pm on Mon and
Wed throughout the summer and it is FREE. She is encouraging the
mothers to come and take turns helping (at least 2 moms each time, the
others can go get a break without kids!) so that she can break the
class into younger and older kids for different levels of signing. The
ages range from 3-11; she doesn't really care about the age since they
all pretty much start at the same level, but the older children learn
more advanced finger spelling. If you want to learn ASL to use in the
home, then a parent should come each week, otherwise, it is hard to
sign from just what your children can remember. That is the best use of
this class. Each week will be a different lesson. Since it is summer
and we all have vacation, it is just a come when you can basis. Any of
the homeschool kids in our group are welcome to come if they don't mind
squishing. She has limited space in her home since the class is free
and not paying for space. Her address is 1023 South 400 West in
Richfield."

Liberty Girls: Christmas in April

For Liberty Girls today we'll be celebrating Santa Lucia day which is like Swedish Christmas. Please wear all white (or as much as you can) as part of the candle ceremony.

Santa Lucia is special to the Swedish because when she was married she gave her whole dowry to the poor. The groom shunned her for this but she has been venerated ever since for her charity in a celebration each December 13 in Scandinavian countries.

** Also, as this is a new semester please bring $5 for each girl to cover the next few activities.

Thank you and see you there!

Attention:EVERYBODY

Hi All
We are coming to the end of another year (where did the time go?)  We need to get together and talk about the camp out and about next year.  I had originally intended to have a board meeting to discuss these things, however I think we all need to be together for this.  I think it would be key for everyone that wants their children to participate in FSA at all next year to meet together.  Some things that we need to be thinking about (1) what kids will be involved in FSA next year (2) what clubs/activities would you like to see happening next year (3) discussion of the board and the fees associated with membership (4) what areas you would be willing to help out in to make it run.  If you know people who do not subscribe to the blog but want to participate will you forward this e-mail out to them.  I would like to meet some time in the next 2 weeks.  Will each of you e-mail me and give me an idea of what works best for you so that I can pick a time that will hopefully meet each of your needs.  Please make a gigantic effort to be there, decisions need to be made and I want each of you to be able to have a say.  I hope you all are having a great year.  Heather  E-mail:  heatherfriant@gmail.com

Something to Think About...

Man is the Master power that moulds and
makes,
And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes
The tool of Thought, and, shaping what he
wills,
Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills:--
He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass:
Environment is but his looking-glass.

Homemade Granola Bars

Before I forget...
Here's the recipe for the granola bars from book club.

2 cups oats
3/4 cup wheat germ
3/4 cup sunflower seeds ( I used half flax seeds, half pumpkin seeds instead)
1 cup nuts, crushed ( I did half almonds, half peanuts)
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup honey
4 Tbsp. butter (I used 2 T. butter and 2 T. Redmond coconut oil, which gave it a yummy flavor!)
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. Real salt
8 oz. dried fruit (I just threw in a handful each of dried blueberries and dried pomegranates)

Mix nuts, oats, wheat germ, and seeds in a baking dish with sides (like jelly roll pan) Toast them in the oven for 10 minutes at 400 degrees, stirring every few minutes so that they don't burn.

Meanwhile, prepare a 9x13 baking dish for your granola by lining it with wased paper lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. (I used plastic wrap, sprayed)

Put brown sugar, honey, butter/oil, vanilla, and salt into a saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.

When grains are toasted, mix everything together in a large bowl. The grains, the liquid "glue", and the dried fruit. Mix everything really well, making sure the glue gets all over everything.
Dump the mixture into your prepared baking dish, spread it out.
Fold over the sides of the waxed paper or add a sheet on top, and PRESS HARD all over the granola.

Let cool an hour or so.

ThenTurn the granola onto a large cutting board, peeling away the rest of the paper. Firmly press down with a big knife, not sawing, cut your granola into whatever size bars you'd like.

You can wrap them individually in plastic wrap, for an on-the-go snack. Or put them in an airtight container, between sheets of waxed paper so they don't stick together.

They are fine stored at room temperature.

Now you have a healthy (at least moreso than the kind at the grocery store), delicious, snack! Of course you can experiment with different combinations of nuts/seeds/fruits to suit your tastes.

Library Party

The librarian from the Richfield library called to let me know that they are having a special book party that will include the Bernstein Bears and crafts on Monday at 2:00.  She wanted it to be especially for homeschoolers and so I told her I would let you all know about that.  It sounds neat, I think if you have smaller kids they will really enjoy it.  I also think it is great that the library is making some cool accommodations for the homeschool crowd.  I hope a bunch of you can make it.  Heather F.

Attention:Scholars

Hi Guys and Gals

Time to get going again with scholar club.  We will be meeting the second and fourth Thursday's.  Our first meeting will be January 13th and we will have our Huck Finn discussion.  This being our first meeting of the semester we will have dinner and watch Huck Finn as well so we will meet at 6 PM.   Look to an earlier post to remind yourselves of the chapters you have been assigned.  I want you to briefly explain what happened and come up with one question for discussion.  I hope all of you have started a book from the TJED For Teens book list, if not now is the time!  Our club dues will be due on that night as well and will be $10.  I look forward to seeing each of you!  Heather

Knights!

OK. Really, I have been on this for awhile. Laura always beats me to the punch! (OK, she just reminds me of the details that I try really hard to forget. Thank you!!)

We are going to start with Ben Franklin! Did you know that his father was a candle/soap maker? Well, he tried to get Ben into the family business, but it didn't work out. Let's make candles Tuesday to see what Ben missed out on! (OK, let's be fair...... ours won't be NEAR as smelly!)

Please bring your $15 for the semester fee! Thanks!

Mandy

Back to Clubs

Happy New Year to all! It's time again to start up clubs.
This Tuesday we will meet at Bastian's at 12:45 p.m. Please come and bring your club dues for this semester. For Liberty Girls it's $15.

Liberty Girls will be learning about Josefina the American Girl. This week's activity will be based on the first book in the series, "Meet Josefina."
I'm so excited to learn about he Mexican-American culture with all of you!
We'll listen to music and learn some Fandango dance steps, have a sample of traditional Mexican food, and practice some Spanish phrases. We'll be planting seeds for you to take home, care for, and watch grow.

Adios,
LauraC.
