July Book Info

If you're in the mood for more oppressive dictatorial government regimes then this month's book will be right up your alley!   In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez is based on the true story of the heroic Mirabal sisters who spoke out during the Dominican Republic's reign under Trujillo.

If, however, you only have time for this during this busy month, please choose a poem from Chile's Nobel prize winning poet, Pablo Neruda to read and share at this month's book lunch.
Many of his poems are available to read online by clicking on this link:
Pablo Neruda  or go to poemhunter.com/pablo-neruda

I will plan on giving a little biography about him because I went to Chile for a Semester Abroad and was able to visit his seaside abode and museum.
We will have my favorite Chilean food as well: empanadas

So plan on Book Lunch this month with South American fare at my house--Laura C's

Lunch with Harmony

Ladies
Stacey Snow from Harmony Educational services called to let me know that they will be hosting a lunch next week to discuss what programs they have available for our use and to see how they can benefit us as a homeschooling community.  They are working to get Cade Douglas to approve partnering with them as well to let us have a local hub school to use instead of having to use Rockwell academy.  I think this meeting would be a benefit to anyone who may use or does use Harmony now or in the future.  The date of the lunch is June 3rd at El Mexicano and they are buying.  I will be in Canada and won't be able to attend but if you can please RSVP to Stacey at 801-310-7520 .  Have a great summer!  Heather Friant

School District Mtg. Today

The School District is having a meeting at 3:00 pm TODAY at the District office.

If you are concerned about the following topics. Please come!!

1.  NWEA testing. (Parents, teachers, and students hate it.  The district plans to continue spending money overtesting and making sure teachers are "teaching for the test")

2. Superintendent position.  (The public would like this position open to all qualified applicants around the State. The district plans to appoint someone only within the district)

There will be 2 speakers advocating for the parent/teacher/student interests for each of these topics. You will not need to say anything. We just want to fill the place so that the school district will see that these issues are important to us.

Thank You!!

Great Opportunity!!

If you can't travel the world you can bring the world to you.  That was my mom's philosophy and the reason we grew up hosting international visitors and students throughout my childhood. I even spent a summer in Spain visiting the family of a student we hosted and earned Foreign Language Sterling Scholar because of it.  Life changing! and the reason I am so excited to be involved in sharing my passion with all of you as an international coordinator.

I need 5 volunteer families to host international exchange students in the Sevier District for the 2013/14 school year.

Students come from Europe, Asia, South America, Middle East and more and they have to pass the highest of standards to be able to come here.  They are expected to go to school full time and participate fully in American life.  They also have their own spending money and health insurance.

If you or your children have an interest in learning a particular culture, or if you served a mission there, you can request which nationality you would like to host.

Families with young children and/or teens make great host families!! I believe this is one of the best educational experiences we can give our children and a great way to make new friends for life.

Call me soon if you are interested or have questions,
